Melanie is a Registered Clinical Counsellor specializing in life transitions, illness, grief, and stress of caregiving. She also provides counselling for anxiety and depression.
Melanie understands that changes can be stressful for individuals and their families, and that peoples' lives can be impacted in several ways by their physical, mental, and emotional health. Counselling can be an effective way for people to focus on what is happening in their lives, to understand their reactions to life events, and to find ways to cope.
In can be very difficult to take the step to begin counselling, however it is a brave decision and often marks the start of clients feeling more in control. Melanie appreciates the power of counselling to help clients feel more hopeful and positive, often very early on in therapy.
Melanie strongly believes in a client-centred approach, and tailors her counselling style to meet the needs and preferences of her clients. Throughout the sessions, Melanie and her clients will discuss what style works well. She draws from the techniques of cognitive behavioural therapy, narrative therapy, and solution-focused therapy. All of these techniques help clients see their challenges in new ways and to identify coping strategies suited to them.
Before returning to school to obtain her Master of Counselling degree in 2014, Melanie worked in health care for over ten years. She is still devoted to finding ways that our health care system can better meet the needs of patients and their caregivers.
Melanie is registered with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. To determine if your health plan will cover some counselling costs, look for the designation "Registered Clinical Counsellor (RCC)" under your coverage. Melanie provides individual counselling sessions (50 minute sessions).
